This system of learning was adopted to allow for:
> Smoother Transition
Progressive learning centered around building strong basics allows for easier pick-up of the advanced syllabuses later
> Lesser Injuries
Building strong fundamentals minimizes the chance of serious injury from reckless practices, thus allowing for greater continuity in training
> Greater Motivation
Dividing a long and arduous learning journey into small easy-to-manage phases, encourages participants to strive for small achievements, while moving towards bigger goals.

What's a Class Like?
A class typically starts with a ritual of bowing and a brief meditation session. This is followed by a warming-up routine, which is guided for the Elementary program and self-performed in the Intermediate and Advanced programs. A drill on basic techniques follows, to revise the basics- postures, striking, controlling techniques and footwork. The class then progresses to reviewing the 'lesson of the day', or revising a lesson that was previously covered. Practice concludes with a physical conditioning routine, before finally closing the class with a ritual of bowing and brief meditation. |
In general, an Ashihara Karate class is a dynamic one, consisting of a unique blend of calisthenics (e.g. drills and functional exercises), supplemented with training equipment (e.g. striking pads) and partner-based routines.
The class atmosphere is often lighthearted, as instructors strive to drive improvement through having fun, with safety and Japanese martial arts etiquette at its core.
